News Alert: House Votes to Impeach Ja’neh; as Proceedings Move to Senate

Monrovia,Liberia- In continuation of impeachment proceedings against Justice Kabineh Ja’neh, the House of Representatives has voted to impeach the Associate Justice from the bench of the Supreme Court.

49 lawmakers voted for the impeachment of Justice Ja’neh, while 1 abstained and 9 lawmakers from Nimba County walked out of the proceeding. As it can be recalled, Representatives Acarous Gray and Thomas Fallah of Montserrado Districts 8 and 5 respectively, filed a petition before plenary for the impeachment of Justice Ja’neh. The petition included several allegations against the Associate Justice, pertinent amongst them was Justice Ja’neh“committed a serious official misconduct by engaging in a wanton and unsavory exercise of his judicial discretion far exceeding the bounds of elementary judicial interpretation of issues simply to satisfy his personal ego”. In addition, the lawmakers alleged that Ja’neh “proved misconduct, gross breach of duty, inability to perform the functions of his office by allegedly allowing justice to be served where it belongs no matter the status of the party affected.”

Some citizens from Nimba gathered at the Capitol early Tuesday morning to protest against the impeachment of their kinsman. Meanwhile, Justice Ja’neh told reporters in Monrovia recently, he will will go to the full length of the law to defend himself against what he called, “unlawful procedure by the Legislature” to impeach him from the Supreme Court Bench.

The next process in the impeachment proceeding is a trial before the Senate by Justice Ja’neh, which will be presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Bench. Concurrence by the Senate will mean the impeachment will take immediate effect.
