Breaking News: Unity Party asks Chairman to recuse himself from Chairmanship of the party; as inquiry into calls for resignation commences


Monrovia- Information reaching the political desk of The Liberian Billboard says, the opposition Unity Party has asked its Chairman, Wilmot Paye to recuse himself from the chairmanship of the party as investigation into calls by some partisans of the party for his resignation commences.

In a press release issued Sunday and signed by the party’s Assistant Secretary General for press and public affairs, Mo Ali, the party said, the decision for the call for Chairman Paye’s recusal is based on a report from Cllr. Frederick Cherue committee which was tasked with reviewing recommendations from a post election retreat held in Grand Bassa County.

It can be recalled, the Unity Party held a retreat on April 7, 2018 in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, where they conducted a post mortem of the 2017 General Elections. During the retreat, the party pointed out the need for collaboration with other oppositions, while some members presented a resolution calling for the resignation of the party’s chairman. At the end of the retreat, the Standard Bearer of the Party, former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai in consultation with the National Executive Committee of the party, formulated an Ad-hoc committee chaired by Cllr. Frederick Cherue to review recommendations which emanated from the retreat. It was based on the committee’s report that Chairman Paye was asked to recuse himself from the chairmanship of the party.

In the meantime, Hon. Prince Moye, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and a partisan of the Unity Party has been appointed by the Standard Bearer of the party, to chair an inquiry committee into allegations levied against Chairman Paye in the resolution calling for his resignation. Hon. Moye committee is expected to start work on August 14, 2018. The Senior Vice Chairman of the party, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe will act as Chairman while the inquiry is ongoing.

In a related development, the Unity Party has appointed Atty. B. Miller Catakaw as Secretary General of the party. According to the party’s press release issued Sunday, Atty. Catakaw appointment takes immediate effect.
