Respected Liberian Religious Leader, Bishop Mai Roberts, Dies

Monrovia, Liberia- Mother Mai Roberts, the long-serving Bishop of the Faith Healing Temple of Jesus Christ, and respected Liberian religious leader, has died at the age of 97 in Monrovia.

Mother Mai Roberts as she was commonly known, became presiding pastor of the Faith Healing Temple after Mother Wilhelmina Dukuly, another famous Liberian religious leader died in 1990.

Mother Roberts who was born Mai Barclay in 1921, held ancenstral links to former Liberian President, Arthur Barclay; her father, Anthony Barclay, Sr., was a son of President Arthur Barclay and also a former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia.

Evident of her religious and Christian beliefs, Mother Roberts made many sacrifices for Liberia and Liberians, famously choosing to stay in Liberia during the 1990 civil conflict. During that period, Mother Roberts used the compound of the Faith Healing Temple on Bushrod Island as a place of refuge for internally displaced people, a selfless act still recognized my many Liberians today.

The late Bishop Roberts was ordained as Bishop of the Faith Healing Temple in 2006 by the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ, a sister congregation of the Faith Healing Temple of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Mai Roberts’ death have seen tons of condolence messages from Liberians all around the world, as well as international personalities who knew of her service to Liberia’s religious community, and the country in general.

Family sources say, funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
