Monrovia, Liberia- Reports reaching The Liberian Billboard says, Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor is seriously ill.
Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor recently returned to Liberia from trips in Ghana and the Republic of Ireland where she went for a medical checkup and to represent Liberia at an international conference respectively.
According to reports, upon the Vice President’s return to the country, her ailment took an unexpected turn and she was immediately rushed to a local health facilty where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Prior to Vice President Howard-Taylor’s arrival, there were reports about a strained relationship between she and her boss, President George Weah, with some reports suggesting that the President was considering replacing her, while other reports said, the Vice President was considering leaving the government. Although both sides have tried to keep the their differences hidden from the public, the distance between the Numbers 1 and 2 officials of government is no secret.
There were also reports of the Ministry of Finance withholding disbursements intended for the Vice President’s office, which include, operational expenses and staff pay, however, Finance Minister Samuel Tweah appearing at Center for Intellectual Exchange and Opinions (CEIO), over the weekend, denied the report.
“The Vice President is being amply supported by this government. At no point in time has this government refused to honor any payment from the Vice President. We are not going to take any of the Vice President record from the Ministry of Finance and put it into newspaper.
“We are not going to succumb to that level. The Ministry of Finance can tell you, that we respect all government institutions,” Minister Tweah said.
Minister Tweah further informed the audience that the President visited the Vice President but was unable to see her. However, Minister Tweah said, the two leaders are in constant contact contrary to speculations and media reports.
The specific illness of the Vice President has not been revealed, but pundits and observers are speculating that the Vice President may be using the sickness story as an excuse to avoid the President, since in fact the two are in disagreement over the internal fightings in the National Patriotic Party and other national issues.
Efforts to reach officials from the Vice President’s Office proved futile.
