Monrovia, Liberia- In response to public outcry about a missing L$9 billion (US$60 million), the government of Liberia has issued a statement through the Ministry of Justice.
According to the release, the Justice Ministry confirms the establishment of a task force that comprise the Liberia National Police (LNP), the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to investigate information surrounding the money into the country.
The release states, “Initial findings indicate that the containers and bags if moneys allegedly arrived between November 2017, prior to the inauguration of the current Government, and August 2018. Evidence available to the Investigative Team has established that the current administration was not informed about the arrival of the containers and bags of money into the country.”
While the statement may seem like a good move by the government, it is however puzzling as to how money intended for the nation arrived in the country after the inauguration without the government’s knowledge.
